Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art from the aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious by her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house for a specific juror. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
